Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska: A Cool Oddity

One of the great things about travel is seeing off-the-beat-and-track oddities and the uniquely creative expression of people across America. Such is certainly the case with Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska, a replica of England’s Stonehenge, but different!

We camped at Eagles Rest RV Park in Chadron, Nebraska, and drove the 45 minutes by car along Highway 87 to Carhenge. An old western-style town, the main draw for Alliance is Carhenge.

The creation began with Jim Reinders, who had lived in England and had visited Stonehenge. When he returned home to Alliance, Nebraska, he decided to create a replica of Stonehenge for his hometown. Since giant slabs of stone weren’t easily available, and cars were. So he selected cars of similar size and shape to the stones of Stonehenge.

The original 25 cars were erected during a Reinders family reunion in 1987 and it took just 6 days to create Carhenge. As Jim Reinder proudly exclaims, “We were able to reduce the time of the original Stonehenge construction by 9,999 years and 51 weeks.”
